St Helen's churchyard

Churchyard for St Helen's church.

Initially a triangular shaped piece of land in front of St. Helen's Church occupying what is now St. Helen's Square. Davygate diverted past it on the south to meet Coney Street outside the Mansion House and Petergate extended up the north side. Although a footpath existed across the yard by the church, it was a major impediment to traffic accessing the new Mansion House as well as blocking the view, since the yard was raised above street height. Levelling and paving gave the first St. Helen's Square, though still smaller than that of today. The removal of Davy Hall in 1744 gave the church this new burial site about 330 m (360 yds) to the south east of the church.
