The Red House

Early 18th century.

Built on land leased from York Corporation in the 1700s. In 1725 the Corporation requested the cancellation of the lease in order that the house may be used as the Mansion House. This was refused and the Mansion House was built in St. Helen's Square. Traces of a former stone house are to be seen in the lower walls.
