Lendal Tower

14th and 17th centuries, view from the river.

The original 14th century tower resembled the Barker Tower on the opposite side of the river, and the circular tower can be seen on the left embedded in the rectangular 17th century addition on the right. (The second circular tower on the far left was the original spiral stair well.) In the 17th century the tower was used for a waterworks and the rectangular addition made. The height of the tower was increased when pumping engines were installed in the mid 18th century. In the mid-19th century the waterworks were moved up river and the tower was lowered by 10 ft and castelated. (Ref. 1c)
