Churchward design by GWR Directors instructions.
A huge success as a publicity exercise but not successful operationally as its weight limited it to the Paddington-Bristol line and the PWD limited it to 65 mph. When costly repairs became due in 1924 Collett took the oportunity to rebuild it as a 4-6-0 Castle class locomotive.
