Baile Hill

Site of second Norman Castle of 1067-8.

When William I came north to York in 1068 in response to an uprising the city submitted to his forces and he built a castle. The city and the north soon rebelled again and William came north for a second time in 1069 and before leaving built a second castle on the other side of the Ouse. It is not known which castle was built first, but it is the one on the northern river bank which has survived, whilst the southern one has disappeared, first into the hands of the archbishops of York and then to the City. It had become known as the Old Baile by the mid-13th century.

All that remains now is a low treed hill with the Bar Walls running just off its summit.
