St Mary's Tower.

The 10th and 11th century tower of St Mary's.

The oldest still-standing church tower in York.

Historical finds in the church and vicinity indicate a church presence here before 900 and the lower part of the tower (base) are of 10th century construction using Roman saxa quadrata found on site. Above that is of early 11th century build with some herringbone work, and finally a 15th century battlement. The tower was restored in the early 20th century. (Ref 1b)
