Site of St Mary's.

The site of St. Mary's Bishophill Senior.

St Mary's Bishophill Senior was a church with early 11th century foundations built on the original site of a group of 4th century heated Roman rooms on a courtyard. In 1586 the parish was unified with St. Clement's and in 1876 the new church of St. Clement's was substituted as the parish church. In 1885 a change of parish boundaries placed St. Mary's Bishophill Senior within the parish of St Mary's Bishophill Junior. By 1963 the building was in such a ruinous condition that it was demolished, with some parts of it being used in the construction of the Holy Redeemer Church in Boroughbridge Road.
