Assembly Rooms

A dancing and social centre for the Georgian gentry of the early 18th century.

Designed by Richard Boyle the third Earl of Burlington and built 1730-1735 and one of the first neo-classical buildings in Europe. The main hall is based on an 'Egyption' hall and is considered to be Burlington's masterpiece.

Well used for the first 20 years of its life, the building has seen mixed fortunes since. It was purchased by the City of York in 1925 and was fully restored in 1951.

The building was purchased from the city of York by the York Conservation Trust in 2002 and it is currently used as a restaurant, but is still open for public viewing.
