Portico.

The portico on the Assembly Rooms.

In the original design of 1731 the steps into the building were placed in a semicircle outside the main entrance. These steps were moved into the building in 1791 and the current porticoed facade was built in 1828.

Well used for the first 20 years of its life, the building has seen mixed fortunes since. It was purchased by the City of York in 1925 and was fully restored in 1951.

The building was purchased from the city of York by the York Conservation Trust in 2002 and it is currently used as a restaurant, but is still open for public viewing.
