St Williams College

St Williams College seen from Deangate.

Built about 1465, St William's College was the residence of vicars (chantry priests) of the Minster other than the Vicars Choral (who had their residences across Goodramgate in the Bedern). The chantry priests had as their sole function to say the mass every day for their founder's well-being in the after life. Externally the College is much as it was when built, though internally the building has been changed so much that it is impossible to tell what the original housing arrangements for the 24 vicars were. The College building went into private hands at the dissolution in 1549.
