All Saints Church.

Lantern Tower, All Saints Pavement.

A church on this location was mentioned in the Domesday book of 1087, though the oldest parts of the current building date from the 12th century. The tower was built in the early 15th century and was partially rebuilt in 1837, with the lantern tower above it being completely rebuilt at that time.

The light in the lantern tower was possibly there originally to guide travellers through the Forest of Galtres to the north and north east of the City. (The 'Forest' comprised much open land rather than being a forest as the term is now used.) Now the lantern is lit as a memorial to the citizens of York who died during the two World Wars.
