Minster

West Front of Minster.

The view of the Minster opened up by widening Lop Lane in the 1860s. Until about 1827 one of the Minster precinct gates was at the end of Lop Lane and rows of houses both on the south side of High Petergate and within the Minster precincts as well as the houses crowded together along Lop Lane itself obscured this view of the Minster. From 1835 to 1860 progressive removal of the houses and then the widening of Lop Lane to form Duncombe Place opened up the magnificent west front of the Minster as we see it today.
