Monk Bar full

Front of the Bar.

Dating from the early 14th century (the top floor from the 15th) this is the only medieval gate to be built on this site. Indications are that earlier gates were built on the site of the Roman gate (porta decumana) about 100 m to the north. Presumably because the porta decumana site for the gate led directly into the Minster precincts, the gate was moved and roads realigned to skirt the precincts..

The gatehouse is of a sophisticated design making it possible to be defended floor by floor.

The barbican was removed between 1815 and 1825 (the blocked up entrances to the top of the barbican can be seen). The small arch (on right) was made in 1845 and the large arch (on left) in 1861. The portcullis is still in working order.
