Lantern Tower

All Saints' church, Pavement

This is a 19th century reproduction of the original lantern tower (28 m, 93ft high). It is believed that the original tower was lit at night to guide travellers to York across the nearby Galtres Forest. The forest, which came right up to the northern edge of the city walls, was a mixture of brush and open lands with scattered villages (Stockton-on-the-Forest, for example) and not a densely packed treed forest.

Now the light is lit in remembrance of the citizens of York who died in the two World Wars.
