Abbey Wall

North West Wall.

Running from the Abbey river landing (now called Marygate Landing) to a tower at the north corner of the Abbey grounds (now called St. Mary's Tower and at the junction of Marygate and Bootham). Disputes between the Abbey and the City in the 13th century led to the enclosing of the Abbey grounds by a wall in the 1260s. The walls remain on the north west (here paralleling Marygate) and the north east (somewhat hidden by the buildings of Bootham).
