Old Royal Station Hotel

19th century.

Built in 1852 when the railway station was a dead-end such that trains from the north and south had to reverse. It became a popular overnight stop on the route to and from London and the North and was used to promote York as a tourist destination in the mid 19th century. It acquired the 'Royal' title when Queen Victoria and her entourage stopped by in September 1854 en route from Buckingham Palace to Balmoral Castle.
