Number 10, Pavement.

The original Rowntree shop.

This shop was bought by Joseph Rowntree senior in 1842, his sons Joseph and Henry were born above the shop. At first the Rowntrees were grocers, not having anything to do with chocolate or cocoa until 1862.

In the mid-1950s this shop contained a coffee roaster, with wonderful smells wafting along Pavement as I rode my bike to school!
