Herbert House

The Herbert House, 12-14 Pavement, early 1600s.

Named after Christopher Herbert, Lord Mayor in 1573, who bought a house on this site in 1557. His son, Thomas, Lord Mayor in 1604, inherited the house. After Thomas's death, in 1614, John Jaques had the property and probably built the current house in about 1614. John Jaques also became Lord Mayor in 1638.

The building was restored in 1926.

The bow in the front of the house has apparently appeared in the last 100 years due to the heavy traffic now using the Pavement. (Ref. 1)
