Church tower

19th century

The church had a central tower and spire (35 m, 116 ft tall) which was damaged by a cannon ball in the Civil War and by lightning in 1730. It suffered wind damage in 1778 and was removed. At the beginning of the 19th century sinking under the tower caused the original tower to be taken down and a new one built within the chancel but this tower was demolished in the mid 19th century and the current tower built on the west end of the church.
