1 St. Helen's Square

Mid 19th century

Built as the headquarters of the Yorkshire Insurance Company (as the inscription on the building indicates) in 1846.

The name 'Harkers' has historical connections with the square. The original Harker's York Hotel was located on the diagonal corner (kitty corner for North American readers) to this current building. The hotel was built in 1770 as the York Tavern and was a major coaching inn being favoured by mail coaches. In 1850 Christopher Harker took over the hotel and renamed it. It was demolished in 1928 to enlarge the square. (Ref. Images of England: York, The Second Selection, by Amanda Howard, Tempus Publishing Ltd, 1998.)
