Theatre Royal

York's first permanent theatre.

First built on the cloisters of St. Leonard's Hospital leased from the Corporation in 1744. By 1765 a theatre 'reckoned to be the finest outside London' was built. During the next 50 years the theatre prospered. There followed a period of decline despite the remodelling of the interior in 1824 and the building of a new facade on the then new St. Leonard's Place in 1835 which replaced the main entrance till then in Lop Lane (Duncombe Place). In the early 20th century the front facade was completely rebuilt giving it the current appearance except for the north entrance built in 1967. (Ref. 2)
