Roman remains

North corner of St. Sampson's Square.

At this corner Finkle Street leaves the square on a line towards the centre of the Roman fortress where the Minster central tower can now be seen. In this corner the remains of a Roman bath house have been discovered and are open for viewing. The presence of a bath house inside a Roman fortress is unusual and perhaps occurred before the establishment of baths in the Civitas across the river, for the bath house was only used for a period in the middle of the fortress's history. (Ref. 2 for the facts, my speculation.)
