Outer ditch

Along Lord Mayor's Walk

This is the only stretch of the outer ditch which remains with little infilling. When the medieval walls were in use, a flooded ditch surrounded the walls. Most of it has now been filled in for various uses such as housing, roads, and car parks. Lord Mayor's Walk was created in 1718 by widening Goose Lane and planting trees on either side (similar to New Walk which was created by the River Ouse). Although there were plans to fill in the ditch and create a park, that never happened.
