Fishergate Bar

Early 15th century

The bar here was in the past much more substantial than that of today as indicated by the portcullis grooves which need a superstructure for their operation.

The wall at the side still shows signs of the rebellion of 1489 when the gates were burned. A consequence of this action was the walling up of the gate from then until 1826 when it was reopened to allow access to the new cattle market just without the walls. (Ref. 2)
