Coney Street is one of a series of streets running just outside the old Roman Walls to the south west of the fort and along the top of the north east bank of the River Ouse, starting with Lendal (once Old Coney Street) near the western tower of the Roman fort and passing south east through Coney Street and continuing through Spurriergate (once Little Coney Street), Nessgate and Castlegate to the Castle.

After the old Roman bridge over the Ouse west of the current St Helen's Square disappeared, it's eventual replacement was some 275 yards (0.25 km) downstream where the current Ouse bridge now stands. The Ouse at this time was tidal in York, so the banks would be muddy and a path established from the new bridge site to the main entrance of the old Roman fort would run on top of the bank. Its eventual importance to the Anglo Scandanavian inhabitants is recorded in its name: King Street. In 1308 it was described as York's principal street and it remains a major shopping precinct for York's residents.
