Deangate

Cut through the houses on Goodramgate to connect with Minster Yard in 1910 to allow the free flow of traffic through the city from Lendal Bridge and Duncombe Place to Monk Bar and Monkgate on the road to the East Coast.

From then until the 1960s this was the A64 road connecting Leeds to Scarborough and carried a heavy traffic load, particularly in the summers. The vibration from the traffic combined with age led to movement in the central tower of the Minster which was only corrected by a massive rescue operation involving new foundations and braces to stop spreading.

Diversion of the traffic onto the Inner Ring road, and then onto a new A64 bypass allowed Deangate to become a dead end for motor vehicles with no through access to Minster Yard past the Minster south door.
