Originally a narrow street continuing the line of Coney Street and Spurriergate on to Castlegate and the Castle. Widened in the 18th and 20th centuries it is one of the shortest of the 'gates' at barely 30 m (100 ft) long.

Castlegate is straight ahead. Turn left into Coppergate heading for Pavement; bear right into Clifford Street heading towards the Castle and Skeldergate bridge; turn right into King Street heading for King's Staith on the River Ouse.
