Spurriergate lies on the road formed on the north bank of the Ouse from Ouse bridge to the Roman fortress entrance (St. Helen's Square). The original width of York streets can be judged by the fact that the street was widened in 1770 to double it's width, and widened again in 1841 and yet again in 1960. The buildings on the south west (river) side of the street are from the 1841 widening. Those on the north east are mainly of 2006 construct replacing ones built in 1960. (What does that say about 'modern' building techniques?)
Ousegate crosses here: to the left, High Ousegate heading towards Pavement; to the right, Low Ousegate heading towards Ouse bridge and Micklegate. Straight ahead is Nessgate leading to Castlegate and the Castle.
