1877 Station

When built this was the largest station in the world. At its peak it had 16 platforms of which 5 were through lines, 5 stub lines were at the south end and 6 at the north end. Now the station is reduced to 11 platforms. It retains the 5 through platforms, and now has 3 stub lines to the south and 2 to the north. A major reduction in services occurred in the 1960s after the 'Beeching Axe' had removed lines from York to Hull, to Bridlington, to Whitby and the branch through Helmesly to Pickering and on to Scarborough, (All of these being to the north of York.) Currently trains from York serve over 150 destinations from Aberdeen to Penzance.

The station is built on a Roman cemetery - so watch where you are stepping!
