Because it was (and is) much used by tourists, Stonegate was the first of the city streets to be pedestrianised in 1974.

A sign across Stonegate at this point has been present for nearly 300 years having been first erected in 1733. (Ref. 1)

On the left is Coffee Yard heading past Barley Hall to Swinegate and St. Sampson's Square.
