Whip-ma-whop-magate

The shortest street with the longest name in York.

Originally the street was on the left of this picture, where the bike racks are now. Originally buildings which were a continuation of Fossgate ran across the end of Pavement to the junction with St. Saviorgate. The buildings were demolished in the early 1950s to make way for an easier access to Peasholme Green and beyond (Stonebow, behind the camera).

On the left is an alleyway leading through to the Shambles, whilst on the right is St. Saviourgate and ahead is Colliergate leading to King's Square.
