St Helen's Square

First formed in 1745 when the triangular graveyard of St. Helen's church was taken over by the city and levelled. This made a triangular-shaped 'square' with the point at the mansion house end. (Cuckold's corner before the graveyard was removed and Blake Street and Stonegate met Coney Street.) The Square attained its current rectangular shape in the early 20th century when buildings on the south east side of the square were removed.

St. Helen's Square also stands on the site of the main gate (Porta Praetoria) of the Roman fortress.

Ahead, Coney Street is on the left heading towards Ouse Bridge and the Castle, and Lendal is on the right heading towards Lendal bridge and the station. Straight ahead, under the arch in the Mansion House is Common Hall Lane leading to the Guildhall.
