Walmgate Bar
The remoteness of this gate from the main city activity has fortunately led to the preservation of this barbican where the other three main gates lost theirs in the early 19th century.
In the Civil War Seige of York (1644) the bar was heavily damaged by gunfire from nearby Parliamentry positions. Attempts were made to mine under the bar at that time, one being thwarted by digging a counter mine and pouring water on the attackers. Restoration of the bar took place soon after the Civil War in the mid 17th century. (Ref. 1c)
